Flores

The islands of the Western Group of the Azores - Corvo and Flores - were found in 1452, when the return voyage of exploration of Diogo de Teive and his son, John Teive, Newfoundland. At the beginning of next year, January 20, 1453, Alfonso V of Portugal made a donation to the islands "Marini Raven" to his uncle, Alfonso I, Duke of Braganza. In this document is not mentioned the island of Flores, because at that time had no name. However this was donated to the island, as the Corvo was at the time considered only a small island attached to the first. The islands were later donated to Prince Henry, Master of the Order of Christ, who in his will, appointing as the island of St. Thomas and the island of Santa Iria. With his death passed to the Prince Fernando, Duque de Viseu.
The current toponymy "Flores", in use since 1474 or in 1475, due to the abundance of yellow flowers ("cubres") that covered the coast of the island, whose seeds were possibly brought by migratory birds from the Florida peninsula In North America.
